Question 1

What is Amaranthus tricolor called in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

Amaranthus tricolor is commonly known as Thampala (තම්පලා) in Sinhala. The name is sometimes applied loosely to related amaranth species as well. It appears in ayurvedic texts and is widely recognised in Sri Lankan home gardens and traditional medicine practice.

Question 2

What are the medicinal benefits of Amaranthus tricolor in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Amaranthus tricolor is valued for its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. It has traditionally been used to support digestive health, reduce mild fevers, and soothe skin irritations. Always consult a qualified ayurvedic physician before using any plant medicinally.

Question 3

Can you eat Amaranthus tricolor leaves?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The young leaves and tender stems are edible and widely eaten in Sri Lanka. A common preparation is Thampala mallum, in which the shredded leaves are stir-fried with grated coconut, chilli, and spices. The leaves are nutritious, providing iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C.

Question 4

Is Amaranthus tricolor easy to grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is one of the easier crops to establish in a Sri Lankan home garden. Seeds germinate quickly in warm, humid conditions, and the first harvest of young leaves is typically possible within four to six weeks. The plant tolerates most soil types as long as drainage is adequate.

Question 5

What is the difference between Amaranthus tricolor and Cordyline tricolor?

Accepted Answer

They are completely different plants. Amaranthus tricolor is an annual herb grown for its edible and medicinal leaves. Cordyline fruticosa 'Tricolor' is an ornamental woody shrub from a different botanical family. The shared word 'tricolor' refers to their multi-coloured foliage but does not indicate any botanical relationship.

Question 6

What nutrients are found in Amaranthus tricolor?

Accepted Answer

The leaves are particularly rich in iron, calcium, folate, and vitamins A and C. The vivid red and yellow pigments in the leaves are associated with carotenoids and betalains, which are antioxidant compounds. This nutritional profile is part of why the plant features in traditional dietary guidance for children and pregnant women.

Question 7

Where can I find Amaranthus tricolor in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows across Sri Lanka's low country wet and dry zones. It is common in home gardens, market gardens, and informal plots. Fresh Thampala leaves are regularly sold in local produce markets and are a standard item in traditional Sri Lankan vegetable stalls.
