Question 1

What is Ageratum conyzoides used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Ageratum conyzoides is used in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition primarily for wound healing, fever reduction, relief of rheumatic pain, and treatment of minor digestive complaints. Leaf pastes are applied topically to cuts and skin conditions, while decoctions from the aerial parts are taken internally for fever and stomach ailments. Its use is documented in Sri Lanka's national Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia.

Question 2

Where does Ageratum conyzoides grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows widely across Sri Lanka without cultivation, appearing along roadsides, field margins, forest edges, and disturbed soils from the coastal lowlands up to around 1,800 m elevation. It is especially common in the wet and intermediate zones of the island. Its adaptability makes it one of the more accessible medicinal herbs in the country.

Question 3

Is Ageratum conyzoides the same as billygoat weed?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Ageratum conyzoides is commonly known as billygoat weed or goat weed in English, a name derived from its distinctive musky scent. It is also called white weed or tropical whiteweed in some regions. In Sri Lanka, it is referred to in Sinhala as Hulan tala.

Question 4

Is Ageratum conyzoides safe to consume?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can be harmful to the liver in large or prolonged doses. Traditional Ayurvedic practice uses carefully measured, short-duration preparations that are generally considered safe under professional guidance. Internal use without advice from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner is not recommended, and pregnant women or those with liver conditions should seek medical advice before use.

Question 5

What active compounds are found in Ageratum conyzoides?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical research has identified pyrrolizidine alkaloids, flavonoids, coumarins, terpenoids, and essential oils in various parts of the plant. These compounds are thought to contribute to its documented antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. The essential oil extracted from the plant has also shown insecticidal activity in laboratory studies.

Question 6

How is Ageratum conyzoides prepared for medicinal use?

Accepted Answer

Common preparations include fresh leaf paste for topical wound care, aqueous decoctions of the leaves and stems for internal use, and poultices for joint pain relief. In formal Ayurvedic practice, the herb may also be incorporated into compound formulations alongside other plants. Preparation methods and dosages should always be determined by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.
