Tucked into the quiet village of Robolgoda near Alutgama and Beruwela, Amal-Villa is a privately owned guesthouse on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, sitting roughly midway between Colombo and Galle. Bentota itself sits about 60 km from Colombo and is home to an estimated 50,000 inhabitants. To its north, the town blends into Beruwala, creating an almost unbroken ribbon of holiday coastline. At the centre of that stretch lies Alutgama, with its railway station serving as a junction for onward travel inland toward the Botanical Gardens. The Bentota Ganga — the river that marks the natural border between the western and southern provinces — is navigable by small boat for more than 70 km, and staff at the villa can arrange river excursions for guests.

Location and Setting

Amal-Villa stands on the south-west coast of the island, approximately 80 km from the airport. The wide, fine-sand beach — several miles long — is less than 100 metres from the villa's door, making it one of the most immediately accessible stretches of coastline in the area. The village setting, caught between the ocean and a lagoon, gives Robolgoda a calm character quite distinct from the larger resort hotels nearby.

Accommodation

The guesthouse opened in 2002 as a purpose-built property and offers six guestrooms in total. Each room is furnished with a king-size bed and has its own en-suite bathroom and fan. The three apartments go a step further, with individually controlled air conditioning, an in-room safe, and a private terrace or balcony. Sunbeds and beach mats are available for use, and a comfortable living room provides a quiet place to read or unwind. International phone and fax facilities are also on hand.

Dining

The villa's family restaurant serves an extensive breakfast that includes fresh juices, exotic fruit dishes, and omelettes prepared to order — served whenever guests choose to rise. The main menu spans both local and European dishes, with seafood platters and curries made from ingredients sourced at the daily market forming some of the kitchen's most popular offerings.

Activities and Excursions

The surrounding area offers a wide range of activities for guests who want to make the most of the coast and countryside. Water-based options include water-skiing, jet-skiing, diving, parasailing, banana-boat rides, fishing, deep-sea fishing, and river rafting as a day trip. On land, beach volleyball, cricket, and tennis or squash at a nearby hotel are all available. For those who prefer something gentler, the long, quiet beach provides a natural setting for jogging or a leisurely walk.
