The Calm Resort & Spa is a 70-room Browns Hotels resort with direct access to the famously shallow bay at Pasikudah, on Sri Lanka's east coast. Low red-tiled wings and a glass-fronted restaurant pavilion are set around a long pool and gardens behind the beach, with plunge-pool suites, a spa, a water sports centre and a children's club for days when the sea is not enough.
Every room has air conditioning, satellite television, a mini fridge, a safe, tea and coffee making facilities and free Wi-Fi. The categories differ mainly in size and outdoor space, and the names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
For a sea outlook choose a Premium room or The Calm Suite; for privacy and a pool of your own, the Passi Bay Suite. Couples who mainly want to be outdoors will find a Garden Collection room with its terrace good value.
The resort sits directly on Passikudah Beach, on one of the longest stretches of shallow coastline anywhere: the bay stays shallow and calm a long way out, which makes it popular with families and with anyone who is not a confident swimmer. The water sports centre runs snorkelling and diving with professional dive masters, kayaking and deep-sea fishing, and there is beach volleyball and cycling. Kalkudah Beach is just to the south.
Apart from the pool, there is the Ayuwása Spa for Ayurvedic and other treatments, a gym, a kids' club with arts and crafts, and indoor and outdoor games such as table tennis and darts. A doctor is on call, and laundry and currency exchange are available.
The main restaurant, Sea Grass, serves Sri Lankan specialities and international dishes. For drinks there are three bars: the Herms Lounge Bar, the Vandalouse Bar and the Bello Beach Bar on the sand.
The east coast is at its best from March to October, when the south-west monsoon brings rain to the other side of the island but leaves this coast dry and the bay at its calmest. The resort names June to August as the peak months for water sports.
The resort is about 203 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, and the drive from Colombo takes around five and a half hours across the island. If you fly in on a domestic flight, Batticaloa airport is about 45 minutes away by road. We can arrange a private car and driver from either airport; ask us when you book. Trains on the Batticaloa Line stop at Valachchenei, about 4 kilometres away in a straight line, and Kalkudah is a similar distance.
Batticaloa, about 35 kilometres to the south, has the old Batticaloa Dutch Fort, about 40 minutes' drive away, on the shore of the wide Batticaloa Lagoon. Inland, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the elephant herds of Minneriya National Park make a full-day trip.
