Scottish Planter-Glendevon Bungalow is a century-old stone tea planter's bungalow at Ragala, about 18 km from Nuwara Eliya, with just four rooms named after Scottish clans. Its first owner was Geo Armitage in the 1880s and it later passed to the Anglo-Ceylon Tea Company; today it is a Thema Collection boutique bungalow, with fireplaces in its living spaces, bold tartans throughout and views over misty hills and tea.
The bungalow's four rooms are sold in two categories. All have a heater, a rain shower, a bathrobe and slippers, a safe, a seating area, a writing desk and Ayurvie toiletries, and every room looks out over the hills and the tea.
With only four rooms, a family or a group taking the whole bungalow will have it to themselves; ask us about booking all four together.
You choose from curated menus of Sri Lankan, Asian and Western dishes, served in the wood-panelled dining hall or out on the garden terrace with views over the hills. The resident 'appu', the bungalow cook, makes traditional Sri Lankan curries to tried and tested recipes using produce from the bungalow's garden. The lounge, with its fireplace, serves cocktails, finger food and a good range of Scottish whisky, and afternoon tea with sweets and savouries is taken outdoors looking over the tea fields.
A Swedish sauna and a Jacuzzi are there to warm you up after a walk, and the in-house therapist offers tea-based massages, foot reflexology and other treatments. A butler looks after guests, arranging special meals or tours. Through the bungalow's partnership with the nearby Liddesdale tea factory you can take a private factory tour and tasting, and there is a cooking demonstration with a walk round the garden. Walks start from the door: treks to the Kurundu Oya waterfall, to Ravana Rock and up the hidden trail to Mahakudugala, birdwatching trails and tuk-tuk rides around Ragala. Wi-Fi is available in the common areas, and parking is free.
The bungalow is set in tea country between Ragala and Kandapola, and its location outside town means quiet estate trails rather than traffic; the slopes around here produce the distinctive teas of Uda Pussellawa. Nuwara Eliya, about 18 kilometres away, has Lake Gregory and the tea centre at Pedro estate, and Hakgala Botanical Gardens lies beyond. The bungalow also arranges day trips to Horton Plains National Park for the walk to World's End.
Yes. The nearest station on the hill-country Main Line is Nanu Oya, the stop for Nuwara Eliya, about 15 kilometres away in a straight line. The rest of the journey is by road, so book a pick-up from the station with us or the bungalow in advance.
The bungalow is high in the hill country, a long, winding drive up through the tea estates from Bandaranaike International Airport and Colombo. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Scottish Planter-Glendevon Bungalow, and the bungalow offers free accommodation and meals for your driver.
It suits couples, honeymooners and families who want a cosy, personal heritage house in working tea country, with fires in the evening and walks by day, rather than a hotel in the busy centre of Nuwara Eliya. Two or three nights give time for a tea factory visit, a trek and a day at Horton Plains. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Nuwara Eliya.
