Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort is a five-star Marriott resort on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, set on the long open beach at Kosgoda — the stretch of shoreline best known for its sea-turtle hatcheries. It has 172 rooms and suites, two outdoor pools, Shine Spa and four places to eat and drink, including a rooftop bar looking out over the Indian Ocean.

Kosgoda is a quiet village coast rather than a resort town, which is much of the appeal: the beach in front of the hotel is broad and uncrowded. Bentota's beach and river are about twelve kilometres north, the Madu Ganga at Balapitiya is a short drive south, and Galle is roughly an hour further down the coast.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is around 120 kilometres north, and the drive usually takes a little over two hours using the Southern Expressway and then the coast road. There is no practical rail or air connection from the airport, so a pre-booked private transfer is the usual way to arrive, and it means the car is waiting when you clear arrivals rather than being arranged at the kerb. Depending on the category they look out over the ocean, the pools or the gardens, and the largest is the Presidential Suite, with wide panoramic sea views. Rooms are finished in warm timber with floor-to-ceiling glass opening onto a balcony, and some rooms carry a large black-and-white mural of a lighthouse and palms behind the bed. S Kitchen is the all-day restaurant, laid out like a modern food market with live cooking stations serving Sri Lankan and Western dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Olive, beside the pool, is the Mediterranean restaurant. Sho Lounge works as a coffee shop through the day, with pastries and snacks, and turns into a cocktail lounge in the evening. Blu3, the rooftop lounge and bar, is the place for a sunset drink with the ocean laid out below.
There are two outdoor pools — one of them set aside for children — and a bar by the pool. Shine Spa has four treatment rooms, including a suite for couples, and offers massages including Thai treatments alongside yoga and fitness classes. For weddings and events, the Grand Ballroom takes up to 400 guests seated theatre-style, with a second meeting room alongside.
Kosgoda has long been associated with sea turtles, and several small, locally run hatcheries along this part of the coast collect eggs laid on the beach, incubate them in protected enclosures and release the young turtles into the sea. Most welcome visitors for a modest fee, and they are a short trip from the hotel. It is worth choosing one that keeps hatchlings for as short a time as possible and does not encourage handling them.
A boat trip on the Madu Ganga at Balapitiya winds through mangroves and past the river's small islands, including one known for its cinnamon peelers. North around Bentota there are water sports on the river and two celebrated gardens: Lunuganga, the country estate Geoffrey Bawa shaped over half a century, and Brief, the garden made by his brother Bevis. Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dutch ramparts and old streets, is an easy day trip to the south.
