A retelling for young readers of the story of Soma Dewi, a woman remembered in Sri Lanka as a heroine. In this account she earns that name through judgement and courage: faced with the Chola forces, it was her stratagem that made victory in the battle possible. Lal Premanath De Mel sets the episode out as a story, with the stated aim of adding to children's knowledge of the island's past.
The text is in Sinhala throughout. International buyers should order it only if they or the child they are buying for read Sinhala, as there is no English in the book.
It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a Sri Lankan publishing house whose list includes Sinhala titles for schoolchildren. For families abroad keeping up a child's Sinhala reading, or for anyone building a shelf of Sinhala storybooks drawn from Sri Lankan history, this is a short narrative treatment of one well-known figure rather than a textbook account.
