Sirisangabo Rajathuma

Da€1.01

The subject is Sirisangabo, a king who ruled in Sri Lanka in the third century and who is remembered not for military victory or wealth but for his compassion, his humility and his commitment to Buddhist principle.

According to historical chronicles such as the Mahavamsa, when rebellion rose against him, Sirisangabo gave up his throne of his own accord rather than allow blood to be shed in its defence. Having stepped away from kingship, he lived on as an ascetic. His story has come to stand for self-sacrifice and moral integrity, and he is recalled with reverence in Sri Lankan history and in Buddhist tradition alike.

Edwin Ranawaka's account of that life is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, a house that publishes in both Sinhala and English.

One point international buyers should be clear about before ordering: this book is written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text in it and it is not a bilingual edition. It is intended for readers of Sinhala — in Sri Lanka, and among Sinhala-reading households abroad who want the story of Sirisangabo in the language it is usually told in.
