A Sinhala version of Johanna Spyri's children's story, prepared by Premasiri Mahingoda. The whole book is in Sinhala — there is no English text in it — so it will suit readers who are comfortable in the language, families reading aloud at home, and those building a Sinhala shelf for children abroad.
Spyri, who was Swiss, built the story around an orphaned girl. After the death of her parents, Heidi is placed in the care of an aunt on her mother's side, who in turn takes her up into the mountains of Switzerland and leaves her with her grandfather. Much of the book follows the child's life in that upland village setting and the way she grows up close to the natural world around her.
The original has long since travelled well beyond Switzerland: it has been translated into many languages and adapted for the screen repeatedly since the silent era. That familiarity is part of what makes a Sinhala rendering useful — the story itself is already known to many Sri Lankan readers through film and retelling, and here it is available to read in full in Sinhala.
