Premasiri Mahingoda's version follows the life of the black horse of the title: his leaving one farm for another, and the many new owners and other horses he meets along the way. It has its sad passages as well as its happy ones, and it ends well.
The shortened form suits readers coming to the story for the first time, including younger readers reading in Sinhala, and households where a classic of world literature is wanted in the home language rather than in English.
