Ekomath Eka Dawasaka

Da€6.03

A collection of newspaper columns by Daya De Alwis, a radio broadcaster and song lyricist, gathered from the series she wrote under this title for the Ridma supplement of the Sunday Lakbima. The column ran for a sustained stretch, and the pieces here are drawn from it.

Most of the writing is personal. De Alwis draws on her own life, and the recurring thread is how a woman meets what life brings her — set out through her own experience rather than argued in the abstract. The short column form shapes the book: these are self-contained pieces, each written to be read in one sitting in a weekend paper.

She later compiled a further set of columns as a continuation of this one, published under the title Ekomath Eka Dawasakata Passe.

The text is in Sinhala throughout. There is no English translation or parallel text, so readers will need to be comfortable reading Sinhala prose. For Sri Lankan readers abroad who followed the column, or who want contemporary Sinhala writing in the first person by a woman, this brings the series together in one volume.
