A picture book for young readers, published in English by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo and written by the Sri Lankan children's author and illustrator Sybil Wettasinghe. It belongs to a recent series of story books from her hand.
The book is set in large type and runs to a small number of pages, which makes it suited to primary school children — those reading alone for the first time, or reading aloud with an adult beside them. Colour paintings run through it, in the style that has long been associated with Wettasinghe's work for children.
For families outside Sri Lanka who want English-language storybooks by Sri Lankan writers and artists on the shelf at home, this is a straightforward choice: a short story, big letters, pictures on the page. It will also interest teachers and librarians building a collection of South Asian children's literature, and adult readers who grew up with Wettasinghe's books and are now buying them for a younger generation.
