Tula and Kumbha Porondam

This page explains how Sri Lankan porondam (Sinhala) and porutham (Tamil) read a pairing of Tula (Libra) and Kumbha (Aquarius) at the rashi level. The results depend on which partner holds which sign, so both directions are covered. The fuller picture comes from the two birth stars.

Which Tula and Kumbha does this page mean?

Here the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so a person who reads as Libra in a magazine may have a different chandra rashi altogether.

Tula is ruled by Venus and Kumbha by Saturn. In the traditional scheme these two lords are mutual friends, which is why the rashi-lord check (rashyadhipathi in Sinhala, rasi adhipathi in Tamil) is obtained whichever way round the couple are. The other two rashi-level checks, the rashi count and vashya, are explained in the sections below, direction by direction.

What happens when the bride is Tula and the groom is Kumbha?

Counting from the bride's sign to the groom's, with Tula itself as one, Kumbha falls fifth. On this count the rashi item is not obtained in both the Sinhala porondam and the Tamil rasi porutham.

The rashi-lord item is obtained, as Venus and Saturn are mutual friends. Vashya, which looks at the natural attraction or influence between the two signs, is not obtained in either system.

So in this direction one of the three rashi-level items is obtained. That is only a starting point, though: the birth stars still carry most of the weight, and the star-level figures for this direction, given further below, show a wide spread of outcomes.

What changes when the bride is Kumbha and the groom is Tula?

Reversing the roles changes the count. From Kumbha, counting Kumbha as one, Tula falls ninth. In this direction the rashi item is obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems.

The rashi-lord item remains obtained, because the friendship between Saturn and Venus works both ways. Vashya is again not obtained in both systems.

This gives two of three rashi-level items obtained. It is a clear example of why porondam is never read simply as "Libra with Aquarius": the same pair of signs reads differently depending on whether the bride or the groom holds each one. Even so, the rashi checks are only a small part of a full match.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each rashi spans parts of several nakshatras, and every nakshatra has four quarters (padas). For this pairing there are 81 possible star-quarter combinations in each direction, and the outcomes vary a great deal.

With a Tula bride and Kumbha groom, none of the combinations reach 8 of 10 porutham. 43% fall in the weaker Tamil band, 36% show a rajju clash, and 65% pass the Sinhala porondam (weekday excluded). With a Kumbha bride and Tula groom, 40% reach 8 of 10, 36% are weak in Tamil, 36% show a rajju clash, and 100% pass the Sinhala porondam.
