Question 2

Which family does Trewia nudiflora belong to?

Accepted Answer

Trewia nudiflora belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, a large and botanically diverse family that includes many medicinally and economically significant plants. It is a dioecious deciduous tree native to South Asia and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka.

Question 3

Where can Trewia nudiflora be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree is most commonly found in the wet and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, growing in lowland moist forests, forest margins, and riverine areas. It is also observed in secondary forests and occasionally in the dry zone near water sources.

Question 4

What animals eat the fruit of Trewia nudiflora?

Accepted Answer

The fleshy drupe of Trewia nudiflora is eaten by large mammals, including elephants and deer, as well as various bird species. These animals play an important role in dispersing the seeds and supporting the tree's natural regeneration within forest ecosystems.

Question 5

What active compounds are found in Trewia nudiflora?

Accepted Answer

Research has identified alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and clerodane-type diterpenoids in Trewia nudiflora, particularly in the seeds. Some of these compounds have shown anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies, though clinical evidence in humans is limited.

Question 6

Is Trewia nudiflora the same as 'Kulu' or 'Tintidika'?

Accepted Answer

Trewia nudiflora is known by various vernacular names across South Asia. In Sri Lanka it is referred to by local Sinhala names in Ayurvedic texts, though exact common names can vary by region and tradition. Consulting a regional Ayurvedic reference or the Department of Ayurveda documentation is the most reliable way to confirm local nomenclature.

Question 7

Is Trewia nudiflora a threatened plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently classified as globally threatened, but habitat loss in Sri Lanka's lowland wet zone creates ongoing pressure on forest-dependent flora. Conservation of intact forest ecosystems and wildlife populations is important for the long-term persistence of species like Trewia nudiflora.
