Question 1

What is Tragia hispida used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Tragia hispida is used in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine primarily for its reputed diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and rubefacient properties. Root decoctions appear in formulations targeting urinary and inflammatory conditions, while the plant also features as a supporting ingredient in compound Ayurvedic preparations. Any therapeutic use should be directed by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Is Tragia hispida found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Tragia hispida grows wild in Sri Lanka, particularly in the dry and intermediate climate zones. It favours open, disturbed habitats such as roadsides and secondary scrubland rather than dense rainforest. It is catalogued as part of Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant inventory.

Question 3

Why is Tragia hispida called a stinging plant?

Accepted Answer

The stems and leaves of Tragia hispida are covered with stiff, bristly hairs that cause a stinging or irritating sensation on skin contact, similar to the effect produced by nettles. This characteristic is reflected in the species epithet hispida, meaning bristly in Latin. The stinging hairs are a defence mechanism common across the Tragia genus.

Question 4

Which plant family does Tragia hispida belong to?

Accepted Answer

Tragia hispida belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae, a large and economically important plant family that also includes rubber trees, castor oil plants, and cassava. The genus Tragia contains roughly 150 species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Question 5

Are there scientific studies on Tragia hispida?

Accepted Answer

Tragia hispida has been documented in ethnobotanical surveys of Sri Lankan medicinal plants, and phytochemical studies on related Tragia species have identified tannins, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Dedicated clinical trials specifically on T. hispida remain limited, and further pharmacological research has been recommended by researchers to substantiate traditional claims.

Question 6

Where can I learn about Ayurvedic medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ayurvedic spice gardens and herbal farms near Kandy and Matale are among the most accessible places to see and learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plant heritage. Village nature tours and guided walks through scrubland habitats can also reveal wild medicinal species. Dedicated Ayurvedic wellness centres across the island offer deeper educational experiences alongside treatments.

Question 7

Is Tragia hispida safe to handle?

Accepted Answer

Direct contact with the plant's stinging hairs can cause notable skin irritation, redness, and a burning sensation. Protective gloves are advisable when handling fresh plant material. Internally, preparations made from Tragia hispida should only be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician, as improper dosing may cause adverse effects.
