Question 1

What is Thespesia populnea used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, the bark, leaves, flowers, and seed oil of Thespesia populnea are used to treat skin diseases, joint inflammation, and fungal infections. Leaf poultices are applied externally for pain relief, while bark decoctions are used internally for certain conditions. The seed oil has historically served as a base for medicated topical preparations.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Thespesia populnea?

Accepted Answer

The tree is known in Sinhala as Suriyamara. It is also referred to as the Indian tulip or portia tree in English, and as Parashu in classical Ayurvedic Sanskrit texts.

Question 3

Where can I see Thespesia populnea growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The portia tree grows naturally along Sri Lanka's coastal belt, particularly in the Western, Southern, and North-Western provinces. It is commonly planted along roadsides, in temple grounds, and near water bodies, and can be encountered in coastal wetland areas and estuarine zones across the island.

Question 4

What does the Thespesia populnea flower look like?

Accepted Answer

The flowers are cup-shaped and resemble hibiscus blossoms. They open pale yellow with a deep maroon or purple centre, then gradually shift to a pinkish-purple colour as they mature over the course of a single day.

Question 5

Is the wood of Thespesia populnea used for carpentry?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The timber is dense, hard, and resistant to saltwater, making it historically prized for boat-building, agricultural tools, and decorative woodwork. Craftspeople in southern Sri Lanka have used it for carved items and cabinet work.

Question 6

Is Thespesia populnea related to hibiscus?

Accepted Answer

They belong to the same botanical family, Malvaceae, which is why the flowers look similar. However, Thespesia populnea is a different genus and is not classified as a true hibiscus. It is also unrelated to teak despite both being valued timber trees.

Question 7

Is Thespesia populnea a protected or endangered species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No. The species is widespread across tropical coastal regions and is not listed as threatened by the IUCN. In Sri Lanka, it is actively planted in coastal reforestation and agroforestry programmes, and wild populations remain broadly stable.
