Kanya and Dhanu Porondam

This page explains how Kanya (Virgo) and Dhanu (Sagittarius) compare in Sri Lankan marriage matching, in both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham. The rashi results here are only a starting point. The real picture comes from the two birth stars, so the figures below show how widely outcomes vary.

Which rashi is meant here?

In Sri Lankan matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), worked out in the sidereal zodiac. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so a person who calls themselves Virgo in Western terms may have a quite different moon sign.

Because matching compares two people, the result depends on who holds which sign. A Kanya bride with a Dhanu groom is read differently from a Dhanu bride with a Kanya groom. The calculator checks three rashi-level items in each direction: the rashi count itself, whether the two rashi lords are friends, and vashya. Each item is marked as obtained, partly obtained or not obtained.

How does a Kanya bride and Dhanu groom compare?

Counting from the bride's sign, Dhanu is the 4th rashi from Kanya. In Sinhala porondam, the rashi item is partly obtained. In Tamil porutham, the rasi item is not obtained.

The rashi lords are Mercury for Kanya and Jupiter for Dhanu. Their relationship is mixed, neutral in one direction and unfriendly in the other. They do not count as friends, so rashyadhipathi (Sinhala) and rasi adhipathi (Tamil) are not obtained. Vashya is also not obtained in both systems.

These are rashi-level readings only. They describe the signs, not the full match between two individuals.

What changes with a Dhanu bride and Kanya groom?

Reversing the roles changes the count. Kanya is the 10th rashi from Dhanu, and the rashi item is obtained in both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham.

The rashi lords are still Jupiter and Mercury, with the same mixed relationship of neutral one way and unfriendly the other. Rashyadhipathi and rasi adhipathi therefore remain not obtained. Vashya is also not obtained in both systems, because these two signs do not fall under each other's influence in the traditional scheme.

This direction therefore starts from a slightly stronger rashi position. Even so, the deciding factor is still the pair of birth stars.

Why do the birth stars matter more?

Each rashi spans parts of several nakshatras. Across both signs there are 81 star-quarter combinations, and their results vary widely.

For a Kanya bride and Dhanu groom, 88% of combinations pass Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item). 60% are weak in Tamil porutham, and 4% show a Tamil rajju clash. For a Dhanu bride and Kanya groom, 100% pass Sinhala porondam on the same basis, 21% are weak in Tamil porutham, and 4% show a rajju clash. In neither direction does any combination reach 8 of 10 porutham.

For this reason, it is best to use the calculator with full birth details and to consult a family astrologer before any marriage decision.
