Question 1

What is Hopea cordifolia?

Accepted Answer

Hopea cordifolia is an endemic tree species native to Sri Lanka, belonging to the family Dipterocarpaceae. It is found in the lowland wet-zone forests of the island's southwestern region and is listed in Sri Lanka's catalog of ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Where does Hopea cordifolia grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is restricted to the lowland wet-zone forests of southwestern Sri Lanka, where rainfall is high and forest cover remains relatively intact. It is associated with primary and mature secondary forest habitats and does not establish well in heavily disturbed areas.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Hopea cordifolia?

Accepted Answer

Traditional ayurvedic practitioners have made use of the dammar resin produced by Hopea trees for preparations related to skin conditions, wounds, and inflammation. These uses are part of Sri Lanka's broader indigenous medical tradition, though modern scientific research on this specific species remains limited.

Question 4

Is Hopea cordifolia endangered?

Accepted Answer

As an endemic species dependent on lowland rainforest, Hopea cordifolia is vulnerable to habitat loss from land conversion and timber extraction. Several Hopea species in Sri Lanka are classified as threatened by the IUCN, reflecting the pressures facing the island's wet-zone forests.

Question 5

What does the name cordifolia mean?

Accepted Answer

The epithet cordifolia comes from the Latin words for heart (cor) and leaf (folium), referring to the broadly heart-shaped base of the tree's leaves. This characteristic leaf shape is one of the key features used to identify the species.

Question 6

What is dammar resin and which plants produce it?

Accepted Answer

Dammar resin is a natural resin exuded by trees in the family Dipterocarpaceae, including members of the Hopea genus. It has been used in traditional medicine, varnishes, and incense across South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, the resin is known locally as dammala.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, near Kandy, maintain extensive collections of Sri Lanka's native and endemic plants and are an excellent starting point for understanding the island's botanical heritage. Guided walks in protected rainforest areas can also provide direct encounters with forest species.
