Question 1

What is Erythrina fusca used for in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, Erythrina fusca bark is used in preparations associated with pain relief and anti-inflammatory treatments. Leaves are applied topically in folk medicine for certain skin conditions. The plant's seeds contain biologically active alkaloids that have drawn pharmacological research interest, though self-treatment is not advised.

Question 2

Where does Erythrina fusca grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Erythrina fusca is found in the low-country wet and dry zones, particularly along riverbanks, waterlogged margins, and coastal lowlands. It also appears in home gardens, temple grounds, and at the edges of cultivated farmland. Its tolerance of flooding makes it well suited to riparian and wetland environments.

Question 3

Is Erythrina fusca native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Erythrina fusca is not strictly native to Sri Lanka — it originates from tropical Central and South America and has been naturalised across South and Southeast Asia over centuries of trade and cultivation. In Sri Lanka it is now thoroughly integrated into agricultural and secondary forest landscapes.

Question 4

What do Erythrina fusca flowers look like?

Accepted Answer

The flowers are elongated, ranging from salmon-pink to brick-red, and are arranged in dense clusters called racemes. They appear seasonally, often before or alongside new leaf growth, and are an important nectar source for birds including sunbirds and bulbuls.

Question 5

Is Erythrina fusca safe to use as a home remedy?

Accepted Answer

The seeds and other parts of Erythrina fusca contain potent alkaloids such as erythraline that can be harmful in unsupervised use. Any medicinal use should be undertaken only under the guidance of a qualified ayurvedic practitioner. Traditional preparations are typically compounded with specific dosages and complementary herbs.

Question 6

What are the ecological benefits of Erythrina fusca?

Accepted Answer

As a legume, Erythrina fusca fixes atmospheric nitrogen, improving soil fertility in the areas where it grows. Its root system helps stabilise riverbanks, and its flowers support pollinators and nectar-feeding birds. In agroforestry systems it is planted as a shade and support tree for other crops.

Question 7

Can Erythrina fusca be seen during a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Erythrina fusca is a common sight in Sri Lanka's lowland areas, particularly near water bodies, paddy fields, and village gardens. Travellers exploring rural areas, wetland corridors, or botanical gardens are likely to encounter it, especially when it is in flower.
