Question 1

What is Cyperus iria used for?

Accepted Answer

Cyperus iria is used in traditional ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka and across South Asia. Its roots and rhizomes are associated with digestive support, fever management, diuretic effects, and relief from certain skin irritations. It typically appears as one ingredient within compound formulations rather than as a standalone remedy.

Question 2

Is Cyperus iria the same as nutgrass?

Accepted Answer

No. Nutgrass is the common name for Cyperus rotundus, a closely related but distinct species in the same genus. Both belong to the Cyperaceae family and share some traditional medicinal applications, but they are different plants. Cyperus iria is known as rice flat sedge and is typically found in wetter, more disturbed habitats than Cyperus rotundus.

Question 3

Where does Cyperus iria grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in moist, disturbed environments throughout Sri Lanka, particularly on the margins of paddy fields, irrigation canals, and riverbanks at lower elevations. It is found in both the wet zone and the dry zone, and it is especially visible in agricultural areas during and after the rainy season.

Question 4

Is Cyperus iria used in any specific ayurvedic preparations?

Accepted Answer

Cyperus iria is catalogued in Sri Lanka's official list of ayurvedic medicinal plants and appears in traditional formulations targeting digestive and urinary ailments. The species is rarely the sole ingredient; instead it is combined with other herbs by qualified practitioners. Standardised preparations available through Sri Lankan ayurvedic pharmacies may include it as a component.

Question 5

Can I see Cyperus iria if I visit Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The plant is common and widespread, so it is easily spotted near paddy fields and wetland margins throughout the island. Botanical gardens such as the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya sometimes include labelled sedge specimens. Ayurvedic centres with medicinal plant gardens also provide guided introductions to species like Cyperus iria.

Question 6

Are there any scientific studies on Cyperus iria?

Accepted Answer

Scientific research specifically on Cyperus iria is still developing. Preliminary phytochemical studies indicate the presence of phenolic compounds and terpenes. Much of the broader research evidence comes from related Cyperus species such as Cyperus rotundus, which have been more extensively studied for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity.

Question 7

Is Cyperus iria safe to use?

Accepted Answer

Within traditional ayurvedic practice, Cyperus iria is used in regulated amounts as part of compound formulations. As with any medicinal plant, self-administration without guidance from a qualified practitioner is not recommended. Visitors seeking ayurvedic treatments in Sri Lanka should consult a licensed vaidya or an accredited wellness centre.
