Question 1

What is Aristida adscensionis used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Aristida adscensionis is traditionally associated with diuretic and cooling properties. Practitioners typically use the whole plant in decoctions targeting urinary health and the reduction of internal heat. It is usually combined with other botanicals in compound formulations rather than used alone.

Question 2

Where does Aristida adscensionis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is most common in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, where it colonises sandy and laterite soils on roadsides, open scrubland, and degraded land margins. It thrives particularly in the North Central, Northern, and Eastern provinces. It grows spontaneously and is generally harvested from the wild.

Question 3

What does Aristida adscensionis look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a slender annual grass reaching roughly 10 to 60 centimetres tall, with wiry stems, narrow leaves, and distinctive three-awned spikelets that are characteristic of the Aristida genus. Its rapid growth cycle — often complete within six weeks — gives rise to the common name 'six-weeks grass'.

Question 4

Is Aristida adscensionis an endangered plant?

Accepted Answer

No. Aristida adscensionis has a wide pantropical distribution and adapts readily to disturbed and marginal environments. It is not considered a threatened species, and in some agricultural settings it is treated as a minor weed due to its vigorous colonising ability.

Question 5

What is the ayurvedic plant reference code for Aristida adscensionis in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda has catalogued the species under the reference code LK94006015. This code is used in official documentation to standardise identification of the plant across ayurvedic research and regulatory contexts.

Question 6

How does Aristida adscensionis fit into Sri Lankan ayurvedic formulations?

Accepted Answer

It typically functions as a supportive ingredient within compound ayurvedic preparations rather than as the principal active plant. Sri Lankan classical ayurveda relies heavily on multi-ingredient formulations in which different botanicals address different aspects of a condition simultaneously.

Question 7

Can visitors learn about Sri Lankan medicinal plants like Aristida adscensionis on a tour?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Several ayurvedic wellness centres, botanical gardens, and government-affiliated medicinal plant collections in Sri Lanka offer educational visits. Guided nature tours through the dry zone, where the plant naturally occurs, also provide opportunities to observe it in its habitat alongside other endemic flora.
