Question 1

What is Annona reticulata called in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Annona reticulata is commonly known as 'Aatha' (ආත්තා) in Sinhala. In English it is called bullock's heart or custard apple, though it is a distinct species from the more commonly named custard apple (Annona squamosa). The tree and fruit are familiar to many Sri Lankans who grew up in rural or village settings.

Question 2

Is Annona reticulata the same as soursop?

Accepted Answer

No, they are related but different species. Both belong to the Annonaceae family, but soursop is Annona muricata, while Annona reticulata is bullock's heart. Soursop has a sharply acidic flavour and spiny green skin, whereas Annona reticulata has a milder, sweeter taste and a smooth skin that turns reddish-brown when ripe.

Question 3

What part of the Annona reticulata plant is used in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Multiple parts of the plant are used in Sri Lankan and South Asian ayurvedic traditions, including the leaves, bark, roots, and unripe fruit. Each is associated with different applications, ranging from digestive remedies to topical treatments. Seed-based preparations also exist but are used with considerable caution due to the seeds' toxicity.

Question 4

Where can I find Annona reticulata fruit in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Bullock's heart fruit is most commonly found at rural roadside stalls and village markets rather than in supermarkets or tourist-facing shops. It tends to be available during the drier months when the trees fruit. Home gardens and village compounds in the dry and intermediate zones are the most likely places to encounter the tree growing.

Question 5

Is it safe to eat Annona reticulata fruit?

Accepted Answer

The ripe flesh of Annona reticulata is generally safe to eat in normal food quantities. However, the seeds are toxic and should not be consumed. As with related Annona species, some researchers advise moderation in long-term consumption, but the fruit is a traditional part of many tropical diets and is eaten safely throughout Sri Lanka and South Asia.

Question 6

Does Annona reticulata grow wild in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not native to Sri Lanka — it originates from tropical America — but it has been naturalised on the island for centuries and grows semi-wild in some lowland areas. It is most commonly found in cultivated home gardens and village settings, particularly in the dry and intermediate climatic zones below about 1,000 metres elevation.

Question 7

What is the difference between Annona reticulata and Annona squamosa?

Accepted Answer

Annona squamosa, commonly called sugar apple or sweetsop, has a bumpy or scaled green skin that separates into segments, while Annona reticulata has a smoother, reticulated skin that becomes reddish-brown when fully ripe. Annona squamosa is generally more widely cultivated commercially in Sri Lanka, while Annona reticulata is more of a home-garden fruit.
