Oatlands by Jetwing is a restored colonial holiday bungalow with just four bedrooms, on a quiet hill in Nuwara Eliya at 6,200 feet above sea level. Now named Jetwing Oatlands Bungalow, it is run as a private home rather than a hotel, with a 24-hour butler, a common living room with a fireplace and a dining room that seats eight, and it stands on St. Andrew's Drive beside its larger sister, Jetwing St. Andrew's.
There is one category, so every room you book here is one of the bungalow's four bed chambers.
Jetwing describes the rooms as sized for two adults. A third guest can be booked in a Deluxe room, and up to two children can share with their parents; tell us when you book so the bedding can be arranged. With only four rooms, a family or a group booking the whole bungalow will have the house, the living room and the garden to themselves.
Meals are served family-style in the bungalow's own small dining room, which seats eight, with a menu that runs from Sri Lankan dishes to comfort food such as beef lasagne, seafood pasta and a cheese and vegetable shepherd's pie. You can also eat in your room, or ask for a meal on the lawn, a candlelit dinner or a barbecue. Guests can also use the restaurant at Jetwing St. Andrew's next door.
This is a place to slow down: the common living room (about 37 square metres) has a fireplace and sofas, and the manicured garden has views over the hills. The butler service runs around the clock, and room service, daily housekeeping, laundry, a doctor on call, car hire, free Wi-Fi and parking are all available. Next door, the naturalist at Jetwing St. Andrew's leads a night-time frog-watching tour.
The centre of Nuwara Eliya is a short drive away, with Victoria Park, the town's promenade gardens, and the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club close by. Lake Gregory, at the edge of town, is about 2.7 kilometres away in a straight line. Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka's highest mountain, rises over the town, and the tea country around it is dotted with working factories such as the Mackwoods Labookellie tea factory. Hakgala Botanical Gardens lies south-east of town, and Jetwing puts Horton Plains National Park, for the walk to World's End, at about 70 minutes away.
Yes. The nearest station on the hill-country Main Line is Nanu Oya, the stop for Nuwara Eliya, about 4.8 kilometres away in a straight line. The final stretch is by road, so arrange a pick-up from the station with the bungalow or with us in advance.
Jetwing gives the distance from Colombo as about 165 kilometres, roughly five hours by road through the tea country; from Bandaranaike International Airport, north of the city, allow a little longer. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Oatlands by Jetwing, which brings you to the door.
It suits couples, families and small groups who want a quiet, personal base in Nuwara Eliya with a butler on hand and the town within easy reach, rather than a large hotel with a pool and a busy restaurant.
