Question 1

Who was King Vijayabahu III of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

King Vijayabahu III was a thirteenth-century ruler of the Dambadeniya kingdom in medieval Sri Lanka. He reigned during a period of political fragmentation following South Indian invasions that had displaced the earlier northern capitals. He is recorded in the Mahavamsa chronicle as a protector of Buddhism who helped stabilise Sinhalese royal authority.

Question 2

When did King Vijayabahu III reign?

Accepted Answer

Vijayabahu III ruled in the thirteenth century during the Dambadeniya period of Sri Lankan history. His exact regnal dates are drawn primarily from the Mahavamsa chronicle. He preceded Parakramabahu II, one of the most celebrated medieval Sri Lankan kings.

Question 3

Where was the Dambadeniya kingdom located?

Accepted Answer

The Dambadeniya kingdom was centred on a rock fortress in what is now the Kurunegala district of Sri Lanka's North Western Province. The site offered natural defensive advantages and access to fertile lowlands, making it a strategically sound capital during a period of repeated invasion.

Question 4

What is the Mahavamsa and does it mention Vijayabahu III?

Accepted Answer

The Mahavamsa is a Pali-language chronicle written by Buddhist monks that documents the history of Sri Lanka from its legendary origins through the medieval period. Its continuation, the Culavamsa, covers the Dambadeniya era and includes references to Vijayabahu III's efforts to maintain the monastic order and royal Buddhist traditions.

Question 5

How many kings were called Vijayabahu in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Several kings in Sri Lankan history bore the name Vijayabahu, making it one of the most recurring royal names in the island's chronicles. Vijayabahu I, who ruled in the eleventh century and expelled the Chola occupiers, is the most celebrated. Vijayabahu III came roughly two centuries later and ruled from Dambadeniya during a similarly challenging period.

Question 6

What happened to Sri Lanka after King Vijayabahu III?

Accepted Answer

After Vijayabahu III, the Dambadeniya kingdom reached its peak under Parakramabahu II, who successfully repelled further invasions and oversaw a significant revival of Buddhist culture and royal architecture. The kingdom eventually gave way to successors centred on Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, and ultimately Kandy.

Question 7

Can I visit the Dambadeniya kingdom site today?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Dambadeniya rock fortress and associated temple remain accessible to visitors in the Kurunegala district. The site is less visited than the major Cultural Triangle monuments, making it a quieter destination for travellers interested in medieval Sri Lankan history. Local guides can provide context on the site's royal and religious significance.
