Question 1

What is Ficus mollis used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Ficus mollis is catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants, where various parts of the tree — including bark and leaves — are associated with traditional therapeutic uses. In broader South Asian ayurvedic practice, Ficus species have historically been applied to inflammatory conditions, skin ailments, and digestive complaints. Specific preparations should always be guided by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Ficus mollis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ficus mollis is most commonly found in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, where it grows in scrub jungle, open forest, and along the edges of larger forest tracts. It is one of several native fig species present in the island's lowland and mid-country habitats.

Question 3

Is Ficus mollis the same as a banyan or bo tree?

Accepted Answer

No. While Ficus mollis belongs to the same genus as the banyan (Ficus benghalensis) and the sacred bo tree (Ficus religiosa), it is a distinct species. It is identified by the soft, velvety texture of its leaves — the quality referenced by its Latin name — and does not share the aerial root systems of the banyan or the cultural-religious significance of the bo tree.

Question 4

Is Ficus mollis found in other countries besides Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ficus mollis has a distribution that extends across tropical Asia, including parts of India and mainland Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, however, it is specifically documented within the national catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, giving it particular significance in the context of the island's formal traditional medicine system.

Question 5

What is the Sinhala name for Ficus mollis?

Accepted Answer

Ficus mollis is known in Sinhala as 'Damba' or by related vernacular terms that vary by region. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda records vernacular names as part of its plant cataloguing work, which helps practitioners and researchers identify species consistently across different parts of the island.

Question 6

Can you see Ficus mollis in any Sri Lankan national parks?

Accepted Answer

Ficus mollis and related fig species are present in the dry zone forests that adjoin several national parks. Visitors to parks in the north-central and eastern regions may encounter this species along forest margins or in open scrub. Nature guides in these areas can often identify Ficus species on request.

Question 7

How does Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue work?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains a formal pharmacopoeia that documents native medicinal plants, including their botanical names, Sinhala and Tamil vernacular names, the parts used, and traditional therapeutic applications. Ficus mollis appears in this catalogue as a recognised medicinal species. The system supports both academic research and the clinical practice of ayurvedic medicine across the island.
