Question 1

What is Ficus hispida used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Ficus hispida is used for a range of conditions including liver disorders, jaundice, anaemia, fever, and digestive complaints. Different parts of the plant — bark, leaves, roots, and unripe figs — are used in various preparations. It is recognised in Sri Lanka's official catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Is Ficus hispida native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Ficus hispida grows naturally in Sri Lanka, particularly in lowland and mid-elevation forests, along riverbanks, and at forest margins in the wet and intermediate zones. The species also occurs across South and Southeast Asia, including India and Bangladesh.

Question 3

How can I identify Ficus hispida?

Accepted Answer

Ficus hispida is identified by its rough, coarsely hairy leaves that give it a bristly texture when touched. A key characteristic is cauliflory — the plant produces its small figs directly on the trunk and older branches rather than at the tips of new shoots, making it distinctive among Sri Lankan fig species.

Question 4

Is Ficus hispida the same as a banyan tree?

Accepted Answer

No, though both belong to the Moraceae family and the Ficus genus, they are different species. The banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is a large canopy tree known for its aerial prop roots. Ficus hispida is typically a smaller shrub or tree valued chiefly for its medicinal properties rather than its size or appearance.

Question 5

Are there any scientific studies on Ficus hispida's medicinal properties?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified bioactive compounds in Ficus hispida including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and tannins. Laboratory research has explored antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and hepatoprotective activities. Most findings are from in-vitro or animal studies, and clinical human trials remain limited.

Question 6

Where in Sri Lanka can I see or learn about medicinal plants like Ficus hispida?

Accepted Answer

Botanical gardens, Ayurvedic wellness centres, and guided eco-tours across the wet zone lowlands offer opportunities to encounter Sri Lanka's medicinal flora. Some eco-lodges and rural community programmes incorporate local plant knowledge into visitor experiences, providing a practical introduction to Ayurvedic botany.

Question 7

Is Ficus hispida safe to use as a home remedy?

Accepted Answer

While Ficus hispida has a long tradition of medicinal use in Ayurveda, its preparations should only be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician. Some parts of the plant, including the latex, require careful handling. It is not a substitute for professional medical diagnosis or treatment.
