Question 1

What is Caesalpinia hymenocarpa?

Accepted Answer

Caesalpinia hymenocarpa is a small to medium-sized prickly leguminous tree or shrub in the family Fabaceae, native to Sri Lanka and parts of South and Southeast Asia. It is known locally in Sinhala as Goda Wauletiya (ගොඩවවුලැටිය). The species is recognised by its bipinnately compound leaves, yellow flowers, and distinctive thin, papery seed pods.

Question 2

Where does Goda Wauletiya grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is most common in the dry lowland forests, scrubland, and secondary vegetation of Sri Lanka's North Central, North Western, and Eastern provinces. It thrives on well-drained, often sandy or rocky soils and can tolerate seasonal drought conditions. It is sometimes found along roadsides and at the edges of dry-zone protected areas.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Caesalpinia hymenocarpa?

Accepted Answer

Documented medicinal uses specific to this species in Sri Lankan ethnobotany are limited, though related Caesalpinia species have been used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine for their astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. Bark and seed extracts from the genus have historically been applied in tanning, dyeing, and folk remedies. Caution should be exercised, and such uses should be explored only under the guidance of qualified practitioners.

Question 4

Is Caesalpinia hymenocarpa endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Caesalpinia hymenocarpa is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka — it is also found in parts of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. However, it forms part of Sri Lanka's dry-zone botanical diversity, which the island shares broadly with the Deccan region of India.

Question 5

What does the name 'hymenocarpa' mean?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet 'hymenocarpa' comes from the Greek words for 'membrane' (hymen) and 'fruit' (karpos), referring to the thin, papery texture of the seed pods. This characteristic distinguishes it from related Caesalpinia species that produce thicker, harder pods.

Question 6

Is Caesalpinia hymenocarpa a nitrogen fixer?

Accepted Answer

Yes, like most members of the legume family (Fabaceae), Caesalpinia hymenocarpa is capable of associating with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in its root nodules. This makes it ecologically valuable in nutrient-poor dry-zone soils, where it can contribute to soil fertility and support surrounding plant communities.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lankan dry-zone plants?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's national herbarium, botanical gardens such as Peradeniya, and the Department of National Botanic Gardens are authoritative sources for information on the island's flora. Guided naturalist tours through dry-zone protected areas also offer opportunities to observe and learn about species like Caesalpinia hymenocarpa in the field.
