Question 1

Is Asgiriya Maha Vihara open to tourists?

The monastery welcomes respectful visitors, though it functions primarily as a working monastic seat rather than a conventional tourist site. Entry to certain areas may be restricted during ceremonies or private observances. Visitors should dress modestly and follow the guidance of resident monks or caretakers.

Question 2

What is the Asgiriya Chapter of Buddhism?

Accepted Answer

The Asgiriya Chapter is one of the two main divisions of the Siam Nikaya, the dominant fraternity of Theravada Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka. It was established in the eighteenth century following the revival of higher ordination lineage brought from Siam. The Chapter's Mahanayaka is one of the most senior Buddhist prelates in the country.

Question 3

What are the ola-leaf manuscripts at Asgiriya Maha Vihara?

Accepted Answer

Ola-leaf manuscripts are ancient texts inscribed on dried palm leaves, used in Sri Lanka to preserve Buddhist scriptures, chronicles, and traditional knowledge before paper became widely available. The library at Asgiriya holds a collection of these manuscripts, making it a repository of significant historical and religious scholarship.

Question 4

Can I see the Esala Perahera procession starting from Asgiriya?

Accepted Answer

The Asgiriya Chapter contributes its own procession to the annual Kandy Esala Perahera, which is one of the largest Buddhist pageants in Asia. The full perahera brings together contingents from multiple temples, culminating in a grand procession around Kandy's streets. Visiting during this festival period — usually July or August — offers a rare view of the Chapter in full ceremonial activity.

Question 5

How does Asgiriya Maha Vihara relate to the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy?

Accepted Answer

While the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is the principal royal and pilgrimage temple of Kandy, Asgiriya Maha Vihara is the headquarters of the Asgiriya monastic chapter and serves an ecclesiastical governance role. Both institutions are closely linked through Kandyan Buddhist tradition, and the Asgiriya Mahanayaka participates in key religious events associated with the Tooth Relic.
