Beach Hut, Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

Arugam Bay, situated 230 km east of Colombo on Sri Lanka's East Coast, is widely regarded as one of the finest surfing and beach destinations in the world. What makes it particularly distinctive, despite its global reputation among surfers and travellers, is the absence of star-class hotels in the area — lending the bay a relaxed, unpretentious character that visitors tend to cherish.

Among the popular surfing joints that line the shore, Ranga's Beach Hut has established itself as a firm favourite. Founded in 1989 with nothing more than a restaurant and two cabanas, the property has weathered years of difficulty — including periods of unrest and the 2004 tsunami — to grow into a well-loved seafood retreat now offering seven cabanas and six standard rooms. A major refurbishment was under way to meet the rising influx of tourists following the restoration of peace to the East. "I am certain that the golden beaches of Arugam Bay will soon be another 'Hikkaduwa'," said proprietor Ranga Krishnarajan, noting that arrivals had risen considerably in recent months.

The Atmosphere and Food

The character of Ranga's Beach Hut is decidedly homely. The food is a particular draw, built around the catch of the day brought straight from the bay — fish, jumbo prawns, king crabs, cuttlefish, and lobsters form the heart of a menu that also extends to Western and Eastern cuisine. Guests are additionally treated to pure curd made from fresh milk and an array of fresh fruits, both of which are readily available in the Arugam Bay area.

The hut's location places it conveniently between two significant natural reserves. Lahugala National Park lies just 13 km away, while Kumana Bird Sanctuary — which forms the eastern border of Yala National Park — is 30 km from the property.

Heritage enthusiasts will also find much to explore in the surrounding area. A number of ruins and heritage sites said to date back to the 5th century lie in close proximity, including the traditional Panama village, Magul Maha Viharaya, Mudu Maha Viharaya, Kudumbi Gala Hermitage, the Oakande Rock, and a Hindu temple. The latter is said to be the spot where Sindbad the Sailor ended up after a shipwreck, according to local tradition.
