This is a Sinhala-language book, printed in Sinhala script throughout, so it will suit readers who are comfortable reading the language rather than buyers looking for an English text.
Its subject is the life of Ben Carson, the American neurosurgeon, and the account follows a man who went against a run of obstacles and came through them, armed with a turn of mind that did not shrink from risk. The thread the book pulls on is what lay behind that success — not the outcome alone but the thinking that produced it.
Much of the story sits in the operating theatre. Carson stepped forward, without flinching, to attempt operations on children that no surgeon had attempted before, in order to pull those lives back from death. The writing sets out to put the reader inside those procedures — the ones that made news around the world — so that they are experienced in the mind rather than merely read about at a distance.
Alongside the surgery, the book is concerned with the character of the man: his compassion, his deep religious faith, and a life given over to being a refuge for people who had none. Humility and quick thinking run through the account, held against the plain facts of what happened.
The book is credited to Ben Karson and Niranjan Chaminda Karunathilake, and comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, the established Colombo publishing house. It will appeal to Sinhala readers who are drawn to biography, to medicine, and to accounts of people who made something difficult out of unpromising beginnings — and to anyone building a Sinhala-language collection abroad.
