Pillam Potha

Alates€1.79

A Sinhala-language workbook for children learning to read and write, written by Kalpa Eranda and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. The whole book is in Sinhala, with no English text, so it will suit a child already learning the script or a household where Sinhala is spoken.

Its subject is the pilla — the vowel signs, also called pillam, that attach to a Sinhala consonant and change the sound it carries. These marks are part of what gives the Sinhala script its particular character. A child who has learned the bare letters on their own still has to meet them in combination, and this book is built for that next step: taking the single letters a young reader already knows and setting them alongside the vowel signs, so that recognising and forming words in Sinhala becomes familiar.

It is a practical, classroom-and-kitchen-table sort of book, aimed at the stage between knowing the alphabet and reading properly. Parents and teachers working with early readers in Sinhala, whether in Sri Lanka or abroad, are the people it is written for.
