A Sinhala translation of a novel by Chingiz Aitmatov, the writer born in Kirghizia, then part of the Soviet Union. The whole book is in Sinhala — readers who do not read the language will not be able to use it.

The story is set in a small village in Kyrgyzstan. At its centre is Duishen, an enthusiastic but untrained teacher who arrives in a remote village intending to bring the villagers education and an understanding of the revolution. The conservative people of the village resist him, and much of the novel follows his efforts, pursued with considerable dedication, to carry out what he came to do.

The Sinhala translation is the work of Dedigama V. Rodrigo. The text had appeared earlier under other publishers; it is issued here by M. D. Gunasena with the official permission of the Russian embassy.

Aitmatov's fiction has long had a readership in Sinhala, and this is one of the titles through which Sri Lankan readers have come to him. It will suit readers of Sinhala literature in translation, those interested in Soviet-era writing from Central Asia, and anyone building a collection of Rodrigo's translations.
