Dalmanuta Gardens is a small Ayurveda resort on the banks of the Bentota River, with just nine detached bungalows spread through a garden of palms and jam trees. Guests come either for a full course of Ayurvedic treatment or simply for a quiet riverside holiday, and with so few bungalows the grounds stay calm and private.
The resort stands at 21 Meegama Road in Warapitiya, on the Aluthgama side of the Bentota River on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka. Bentota railway station is about 0.3 km away and Aluthgama station about 1.2 km, both on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle. The beach is a short drive or a boat ride down the river.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 105 km from the resort, and the drive usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours on the airport and Southern expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the resort in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Dalmanuta Gardens.
Each of the nine bungalows has a sleeping area, a spacious bathroom, a lounge with satellite television and a veranda facing its own private garden. They are air-conditioned, with fans and mosquito nets, a fridge and minibar, a kettle and Wi-Fi.
The restaurant faces the river, and meals can also be taken in three small huts on stilts that stand out over the water. The menu changes through your stay and can be adapted for guests following an Ayurvedic treatment plan, with vegetables from the resort's own garden. The Juicy Fruit pool bar, in a wooden hut, serves drinks by the pool.
The Ayurveda clinic, built in the traditional Sri Lankan clay style, offers treatment plans drawn up with Ayurvedic doctors, and there is a small gym for guests. A swimming pool and a jacuzzi sit on a rise among the palms, and the herbal garden holds more than 200 medicinal plants. The Silent Garden, with its fish ponds and small islands for contemplation, is set aside for quiet time and meditation, and the resort can organise boat and fishing trips on the river.
