Buddha Gadya Saha Sakaskadaya

Alates€0.89

Buddha Gadya is a work of praise addressed to the Buddha, attributed to an unnamed scholar of an earlier age. Its name has puzzled readers for a long time: gadya means prose, yet the composition is in verse, so that Buddha Padya would be the accurate title. The older name has stayed in common use regardless. Some readers and scholars have taken the work to be by Attaragama Rajaguru Bandara Pandita, though the attribution is not settled. Here it appears together with Sakaskadaya.

The book is in Sinhala throughout, including the title and any supporting material, and no English text is included. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should be comfortable reading Sinhala, and comfortable with classical Sinhala verse in particular, as the devotional poetry of this tradition uses an older register than everyday prose.

It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a long-established Colombo house whose list covers Sinhala literature and educational titles. The volume will suit readers with an interest in Sinhala Buddhist devotional poetry, students of classical Sinhala literature, and anyone building a shelf of the older verse works still in print in Sri Lanka.
