Question 1

What is Vanda tessellata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In classical Ayurvedic medicine, Vanda tessellata — known as Rasna — is used primarily in formulations for rheumatic, musculoskeletal, and respiratory conditions. Leaves, stems, and roots feature in decoctions and compound preparations. It appears in well-known classical formulas such as Yogaraja Guggulu, which targets joint and muscle disorders.

Question 2

Where can Vanda tessellata be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, particularly across the North Central, Eastern, and parts of the Southern provinces. It lives as an epiphyte on large canopy trees in open, sun-exposed woodland. Wild populations have declined due to habitat loss and collection pressure.

Question 3

What does Vanda tessellata look like?

Accepted Answer

It is an upright orchid with leathery strap-like leaves, aerial roots, and loose clusters of flowers that display a yellowish-brown, chequered patterning — the tessellation referenced in its name. Each flower is roughly 3–4 cm across and has a small violet or purple lip at its centre. Flowering typically peaks between April and July.

Question 4

Is Vanda tessellata endangered or protected?

Accepted Answer

As an orchid, it falls under CITES Appendix II globally, restricting commercial international trade to permitted sources. In Sri Lanka, the Flora and Fauna Protection Ordinance affords further legal protection. Wild populations face pressure from agricultural encroachment and collection for the herbal trade, making cultivation-sourced material increasingly important.

Question 5

What is the Sinhala name for Vanda tessellata?

Accepted Answer

The plant is commonly referred to as Manel or Rasna in Sinhala, with Rasna also being its Sanskrit name in Ayurvedic texts. It is listed in Sri Lanka's national medicinal plant catalogue under the reference code LK94006056.

Question 6

How do you grow Vanda tessellata at home?

Accepted Answer

Vanda tessellata requires bright light, strong air circulation, and a pronounced dry resting period that mimics its native dry-zone habitat. Mounting on cork bark or a wooden slab suits it better than conventional potting mix. It is a slow grower and may take several years from seedling to first flowering.

Question 7

Is there scientific research supporting the medicinal properties of Vanda tessellata?

Accepted Answer

Preliminary pharmacological studies have identified flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds in Vanda tessellata tissue, with some studies reporting antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity in laboratory settings. This research is at an early stage and does not replace clinical evidence or professional medical advice.
