Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, Theobroma cacao is recognised for its theobromine content, which has mild stimulant and bronchodilatory properties. Cocoa butter extracted from the seeds is used in topical preparations as an emollient for skin care and wound healing. The plant is formally listed in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal species.

Question 3

What does Theobroma cacao mean?

Accepted Answer

The name Theobroma derives from Greek and translates as 'food of the gods'. Cacao is the Latinised form of the word used by Mesoamerican peoples for the plant. The full name was assigned by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century and reflects the high cultural value placed on chocolate by pre-Columbian civilisations.

Question 4

What are the health benefits of Theobroma cacao?

Accepted Answer

Cacao seeds contain flavanols linked to antioxidant and cardiovascular benefits, and theobromine, a mild natural stimulant. Research has also examined theobromine's potential as a cough suppressant and bronchial relaxant. Cocoa butter is widely used in both pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations for its emollient properties.

Cacao generally refers to the raw plant, its seeds, and minimally processed products, while cocoa typically describes seeds or powder that have been roasted and processed. In everyday usage, the two terms are often used interchangeably, though in specialty food markets the distinction can carry significance regarding level of processing.

Question 6

Can I visit a cacao plantation in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Many spice gardens open to visitors in the Matale, Kandy, and southern coastal regions include cacao trees alongside other tropical crops.
