Question 1

What is Tetrameles nudiflora used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic tradition, Tetrameles nudiflora — primarily its bark — is included in traditional formulations associated with fever, inflammation, and liver health. It typically appears as one component within compound remedies rather than as a standalone treatment. Modern phytochemical research is beginning to investigate the bioactive compounds that may underlie these traditional uses.

Question 2

Where does Tetrameles nudiflora grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species favours Sri Lanka's wetter lowland and sub-montane forest zones, particularly riverine and rainforest habitats. It is associated with high-rainfall areas and can be found in or near protected reserves in the island's wet zone. Habitat loss has reduced populations outside protected areas.

Question 3

Is Tetrameles nudiflora endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Tetrameles nudiflora is not endemic to Sri Lanka. It has a broad distribution across South and Southeast Asia, from the Indian subcontinent through mainland Southeast Asia and parts of the Malay Archipelago. In Sri Lanka it is a native species with documented use in local ayurvedic medicine.

Question 4

What family does Tetrameles nudiflora belong to?

Accepted Answer

Tetrameles nudiflora belongs to the family Tetramelaceae and is the sole species in its genus, making it monotypic. It was previously sometimes placed within the broader family Datiscaceae before being recognised in its own distinct family.

Question 5

What are the identifying features of Tetrameles nudiflora?

Accepted Answer

The tree is characterised by large buttress roots, a tall straight trunk, and broad ovate leaves that are shed during the dry season. It is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate trees, and it flowers while largely leafless. The bark is typically pale grey and relatively smooth on younger specimens.

Question 6

What is the local Sinhala name for Tetrameles nudiflora?

Accepted Answer

The tree is referred to by vernacular names that can vary across regions in Sri Lanka. It is sometimes recorded under names such as Kumuda in local botanical literature, though practitioners and collectors may use different regional names. Cross-referencing with the standardised catalogue identifier helps avoid confusion between similar-looking species.

Question 7

Are there conservation concerns for Tetrameles nudiflora in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Populations outside protected forest areas have declined due to land conversion and the historical use of the light timber for packaging and rural construction. The species is not currently listed as globally threatened, but local conservation of lowland and riverine rainforest habitats remains important for maintaining viable populations in Sri Lanka.
