Spilanthes paniculata is primarily used in Ayurvedic medicine for toothache relief, oral inflammation, and as an anti-inflammatory agent. Question 3

Is Spilanthes paniculata the same as the toothache plant?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Spilanthes paniculata is commonly called the toothache plant due to its well-known ability to temporarily numb dental pain when a flower head is chewed. It is botanically related to Acmella oleracea, and the two names are sometimes used interchangeably in modern botanical literature.

Where does Spilanthes paniculata grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate climate zones, typically in moist, open habitats such as roadsides, stream margins, and garden plots. It is common in the southwestern lowlands and thrives at low to mid elevations. Its ease of cultivation has kept it present in village home gardens for generations.

Question 5

What is spilanthol and why is it important?

Accepted Answer

Spilanthol is an alkylamide compound found in the flower heads and other tissues of Spilanthes paniculata. It is also used in some cosmetic products for its mild effect on facial muscle tone.

Question 6

Are there any side effects of using Spilanthes paniculata?

Accepted Answer
