Question 1

What is Sauropus androgynus called in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Sauropus androgynus is most commonly known as Kathurumurunga in Sinhala. It is a popular leafy green used in both everyday cooking and traditional Ayurvedic medicine across the island.

Question 2

What are the health benefits of Kathurumurunga leaves?

Accepted Answer

Kathurumurunga leaves are nutritionally dense, providing protein, iron, and vitamins A and C. In Ayurvedic practice they are used to support lactation, ease digestive complaints, and address general nutritional deficiencies. They are typically consumed cooked rather than raw.

Question 3

Is it safe to eat Sauropus androgynus leaves?

Accepted Answer

Cooked leaves consumed in normal food quantities are considered safe and are a traditional vegetable in Sri Lankan and other Southeast Asian cuisines. Large doses of raw leaf juice, however, have been linked to adverse respiratory effects in documented cases from Southeast Asia, so concentrated raw preparations should be avoided without medical guidance.

Question 4

How is Kathurumurunga prepared in Sri Lankan cuisine?

Accepted Answer

The most common preparation is a stir-fry with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and dried chillies, known locally as malluma. The leaves are also added to lentil curries and served as a side vegetable with rice. Light cooking is standard and is considered to preserve the plant's beneficial qualities while eliminating concerns about raw consumption.

Question 5

What is the Ayurvedic classification of Sauropus androgynus?

Accepted Answer

Sauropus androgynus is registered in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog under the reference LK94006465. It is regarded in classical Ayurvedic texts as having tridoshahara properties, meaning it is believed to help balance all three primary biological energies — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Question 6

Where does Sauropus androgynus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The shrub grows widely in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, particularly in home gardens and village compounds in the lowlands. It tolerates partial shade and produces leaves year-round, making it a reliable crop for rural households. It is also cultivated in Ayurvedic herbal gardens attached to traditional treatment centres.

Question 7

Can tourists visit Ayurvedic herb gardens in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Spice and herbal gardens in the Kandy and Matale regions are popular stops on cultural itineraries and typically showcase plants like Kathurumurunga alongside other medicinal and culinary species. Many Ayurvedic wellness centres also offer guided introductions to Sri Lanka's herbal medicine traditions as part of their guest programmes.
