Question 1

What does SLTDA registration mean for a hotel or villa in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

SLTDA stands for the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the government body that licenses and inspects all tourism accommodation in the country. A registered property has met minimum standards for fire safety, sanitation, structural integrity, and guest welfare. Registration numbers are publicly verifiable on the SLTDA's official website.

Question 2

How can I verify that my Sri Lanka hotel is officially registered?

Accepted Answer

Ask the property to show its SLTDA registration certificate, which should be displayed at reception. You can also cross-check the registration number on the SLTDA's official website. Lakpura includes the registration number in its property listings so guests can verify independently before booking.

Question 3

Is it safe to stay in a small guest house or boutique villa in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Many smaller properties in Sri Lanka are owner-operated and maintain very high personal standards of security and hospitality. The key is to confirm that the property is SLTDA-registered and to review consistent guest feedback across multiple booking cycles. Size alone is not an indicator of safety.

Question 4

What security features should a safe Sri Lanka hotel have?

Accepted Answer

Look for 24-hour front-desk coverage, electronic or deadbolt room locks, an in-room safe or secure storage option, working smoke detectors and clearly marked fire exits, and potable drinking water provided in the room. Reputable properties also maintain an on-call medical contact and post local emergency numbers.

Question 5

What is the Tourist Police in Sri Lanka and how do they help travellers?

Accepted Answer

The Tourist Police is a specialist division of the Sri Lanka Police that operates in major tourism zones including Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Negombo. Officers typically speak basic English and are trained to assist foreign visitors with complaints, lost property, and emergencies. Their presence in tourist areas adds an additional layer of security for travellers.

Question 6

Does Lakpura guarantee the quality and safety of accommodation it books?

Accepted Answer

Lakpura curates its accommodation portfolio through a combination of SLTDA registration checks, periodic property visits, and ongoing guest-feedback monitoring. Properties that do not maintain standards are removed from the portfolio. While no third party can guarantee the conduct of an independent property absolutely, Lakpura's 24-hour ground support means issues can be addressed promptly during a stay.

Question 7

Is accommodation near national parks in Sri Lanka safe?

Accepted Answer

Eco-lodges and safari camps adjacent to reserves such as Udawalawe, Wilpattu, and Horton Plains are generally well-managed and are regulated by both the SLTDA and the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Guests should follow property guidelines about moving after dark in areas where wildlife may be present — this is a wildlife-management consideration rather than a security one.

Question 8

What happens if there is a problem with my accommodation while I am in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Travellers booked through Lakpura can contact their dedicated ground handler at any hour via phone or WhatsApp. Lakpura can arrange alternative accommodation, liaise directly with the property management, or connect guests with the SLTDA's tourist complaints division or the Tourist Police if necessary. Resolving accommodation issues quickly is a core part of the Lakpura ground-support service.
