Question 1

What is Polyalthia suberosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurveda, Polyalthia suberosa is traditionally used for its antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Different parts of the plant — bark, roots, leaves, and seeds — are incorporated into various formulations. It is best used under the guidance of a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Polyalthia suberosa grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is native to the dry zone and arid coastal regions of Sri Lanka, growing in open scrubland, rocky terrain, and along forest margins. It is most commonly encountered in the Northern, North Central, and Eastern provinces, where the climate is seasonal and drier than the wet southwest.

Question 3

What family does Polyalthia suberosa belong to?

Accepted Answer

Polyalthia suberosa belongs to the Annonaceae family, which also includes well-known tropical fruit trees such as soursop and custard apple. The genus Polyalthia contains numerous species across tropical Asia, several of which are native to Sri Lanka.

Question 4

Is Polyalthia suberosa endangered or threatened in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

While Polyalthia suberosa is not currently listed as a globally threatened species, continued wild collection for medicinal use without adequate replanting raises sustainability concerns. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda encourages cultivation of such plants in home gardens to reduce pressure on wild populations.

Question 5

What are the active compounds in Polyalthia suberosa?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified alkaloids and acetogenins as key bioactive constituents in Polyalthia suberosa, consistent with patterns found across the Annonaceae family. These compounds are associated with the plant's antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties, though clinical research in humans remains limited.

Question 6

Can tourists see Polyalthia suberosa in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Travellers are most likely to encounter Polyalthia suberosa in the dry-zone scrub forests of the North and North Central provinces, or in botanical collections such as the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya. Ayurvedic wellness centres sometimes include medicinal plant gardens where such species are grown and labelled.
