Question 1

What is Phaseolus lunatus called in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

Phaseolus lunatus is commonly referred to as 'Wal Pea' or sometimes 'Butter Bean' in Sri Lanka, though local names can vary by region and variety. In formal Ayurvedic texts, the plant is catalogued under its Latin binomial to avoid confusion with similar-looking legumes.

Question 2

Are lima beans safe to eat raw in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Raw lima beans contain a cyanogenic compound called linamarin, which can be harmful if consumed in large quantities without cooking. In Sri Lankan cooking, the beans are always boiled thoroughly before consumption, which breaks down these compounds and makes them completely safe to eat.

Question 3

What are the health benefits of Phaseolus lunatus in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic tradition, lima beans are recognised for their protein and micronutrient content and are used to support recovery from weakness and fatigue. Some traditional practitioners also incorporate them into dietary regimens aimed at managing blood sugar levels, though clinical evidence varies and professional guidance is advised.

Question 4

Where is Phaseolus lunatus grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Lima beans are cultivated across Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, where well-drained sandy loam soils and moderate rainfall suit the crop. They are commonly found in home gardens and smallholder farms throughout the North Central and Northern Provinces.

Question 5

How is lima bean curry prepared in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lankan lima bean curry typically involves soaking and boiling the dried seeds until tender, then cooking them with coconut milk, turmeric, mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chilli, and sometimes tomato. The dish is served as a protein-rich accompaniment to steamed rice.

Question 6

Does Phaseolus lunatus help improve soil quality?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Like other legumes, Phaseolus lunatus forms a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil, improving fertility for subsequent crops. This makes it a valuable component of traditional crop rotation in Sri Lankan smallholder agriculture.

Question 7

How does Phaseolus lunatus differ from other beans grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Phaseolus lunatus is distinguished by its flat, crescent-shaped or broadly oval seeds and its notably creamy texture when cooked, owing to a higher fat content than most other beans. It is botanically distinct from common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and local varieties such as the lablab bean, which are often grown alongside it.
