Question 1

What is Oryza sativa used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic practice, Oryza sativa is used as both a dietary staple and a therapeutic substance. Traditional preparations include rice gruel (kanji) for convalescence, rice water as a digestive tonic, and specific unpolished heirloom varieties recommended for metabolic and digestive conditions. The plant is classified in classical texts according to its cooling qualities and ease of digestion.

Question 2

What traditional rice varieties are grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has hundreds of documented traditional rice varieties, including aromatic Suwandel, red-grained Pachchaperumal, and dark-hued Kaluheenati. These heirloom strains are valued in Ayurvedic practice for their nutritional and medicinal properties and are being revived by organic farmers after decades of displacement by high-yield commercial varieties.

Question 3

Is Oryza sativa the same as ordinary rice?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Oryza sativa is the scientific name for Asian cultivated rice, the species that provides the staple grain for the majority of the world's population. The species includes two main subspecies: indica (long-grain, predominant in tropical Asia including Sri Lanka) and japonica (shorter grain, more common in East Asia and temperate regions).

Question 4

What is the significance of rice in Sri Lankan culture?

Accepted Answer

Rice is central to Sri Lankan cultural and spiritual life. Milk rice (kiribath), made by cooking rice in coconut milk, is traditionally served at New Year, weddings, and major religious occasions. Ancient civilisations built elaborate irrigation systems specifically to sustain paddy cultivation, and the paddy field remains an iconic feature of the Sri Lankan landscape.

Question 5

When is rice harvested in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has two main paddy-growing seasons. The Maha season (approximately October to March) is the major season, relying on the north-east monsoon rains. The Yala season (approximately May to August) is the minor season, irrigated mainly from stored tank water. Harvest typically occurs at the end of each season.

Question 6

Where can I see traditional paddy farming in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Traditional paddy cultivation can be observed across the dry zone (north-central province) and the wet zone foothills around Kandy and Ella. Village-stay and agro-tourism programmes occasionally offer participation in planting or harvesting activities during the appropriate seasons, giving visitors a direct experience of this ancient agricultural practice.

Question 7

How does red rice differ from white rice in Ayurvedic terms?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic and traditional Sri Lankan dietary thinking, red (unpolished) rice retains its bran layer and is considered nutritionally superior and easier on metabolic function than white-milled rice. Practitioners typically recommend traditional red varieties such as Kaluheenati or Pachchaperumal for patients managing digestive or metabolic conditions.
