Question 1

How many trains stop at Murunkan Station per day?

Accepted Answer

On a typical day, two trains call at Murunkan Station — one service heading toward Talaimannar and one in the direction of Medawachchiya or Colombo. Frequencies can vary on public holidays and during timetable revisions, so it is advisable to confirm before travelling.

Question 2

Accepted Answer

Murunkan is a station on the Talaimannar Line of Sri Lanka Railways. This line runs from Medawachchiya westward through Mannar District to Talaimannar Pier on the northwestern coast.

Question 3

What is the telephone number for Murunkan Railway Station?

Accepted Answer

The station contact number is 023-3232236. Calling ahead is recommended to confirm train times, as schedules on the Talaimannar Line can change.

Question 4

Is there anything worth seeing near Murunkan?

Accepted Answer

The Murunkan area offers several notable attractions, including Giant's Tank, an ancient reservoir and important bird habitat, and the Madhu Road Shrine, a major Catholic pilgrimage destination. Mannar Island, accessible by continuing on the line toward Talaimannar, has a Portuguese fort, African baobab trees, and significant coastal wetlands.

Question 5

How do I travel from Colombo to Murunkan by train?

Accepted Answer

Trains on the Talaimannar Line depart from Colombo Fort Station, typically changing or originating at Medawachchiya junction. The journey is long — expect to allow the better part of a day. Reserving a seat in advance at Colombo Fort is strongly recommended for comfortable travel.

Question 6

What is the best time of year to take the Talaimannar Line train?

Accepted Answer

May to September offers the most settled weather in Sri Lanka's dry northwest, making it the most practical season for rail travel on the Talaimannar Line. The northeast monsoon (October to January) can affect services, though this period is also rewarding for birdwatchers visiting the Mannar wetlands.

Question 7

Has the Talaimannar Line been restored after the civil conflict?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Talaimannar Line was progressively rehabilitated following the end of the conflict in 2009, with services restored in stages through the 2010s. The full line to Talaimannar Pier is now operational, though train frequency remains limited compared to busier routes in the south and hill country.
