Mesha and Kumbha Porondam

This page explains how Mesha (Aries) and Kumbha (Aquarius) compare in Sri Lankan marriage matching, in both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham. The rashi here is the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka, not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes. The rashi-level picture is only a starting point, because the two birth stars decide the real result.

What happens when the bride is Mesha and the groom is Kumbha?

Counting from the bride's sign to the groom's, Kumbha is the 11th rashi from Mesha. In Sinhala porondam, rashi porondam is obtained, rashyadhipathi is partly obtained and vashya is not obtained.

The Tamil porutham reads a little differently: rasi porutham is obtained, while rasi adhipathi and vasya are both not obtained. The two systems weigh the same signs by their own rules, so it is normal for them to give slightly different answers. These three items are only part of the full chart, and most of the matching still depends on the birth stars of the couple.

What changes when the bride is Kumbha and the groom is Mesha?

Reversing the pair changes the count. Counting from Kumbha to Mesha gives the 3rd rashi, so the results shift. In Sinhala porondam, rashi porondam and rashyadhipathi are both partly obtained, and vashya is obtained in this direction.

In Tamil porutham, rasi, rasi adhipathi and vasya are all not obtained for this arrangement. This is why astrologers always ask which partner is the bride and which is the groom: the same two signs can read quite differently depending on the direction of the count. Neither direction settles the question by itself, as the birth stars carry far more weight.

Are the rashi lords Mars and Saturn friends?

Mesha is ruled by Mars and Kumbha by Saturn. In the traditional scheme of planetary relationships, these two lords are not counted as friends: their relationship is neutral and hostile, meaning one lord regards the other as neutral while the other regards it as hostile.

Because the relationship is mixed rather than friendly, the Sinhala rashyadhipathi item is only partly obtained in both directions, and the stricter Tamil rasi adhipathi item is not obtained in either. This is one factor among many. Families often find that a mixed lordship result matters much less once the full star-based matching has been worked out.

Why do the birth stars matter more than the rashi?

Each rashi covers nine star-quarters (padas), so a Mesha and Kumbha pairing allows 81 star-quarter combinations in each direction, and the outcomes vary widely. With a Mesha bride and Kumbha groom, about 41% of combinations pass Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item), while about 58% come out weak on the Tamil count. With a Kumbha bride and Mesha groom, about 52% pass Sinhala porondam and about 83% are weak in Tamil terms.

Encouragingly, none of the combinations in either direction shows a Tamil rajju clash, though none reaches 8 of 10 porutham. Only the actual birth stars can show where a couple sits.
