Question 2

What family does Merremia umbellata belong to?

Accepted Answer

Merremia umbellata belongs to the family Convolvulaceae, which also includes morning glories and sweet potato vines. The genus Merremia comprises around 80 tropical species, and M. umbellata is one of the more widely recorded in South and Southeast Asia.

Question 3

Where does Merremia umbellata grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found mainly in Sri Lanka's low country wet and intermediate zones. It commonly grows along roadsides, forest edges, and disturbed land where there is adequate rainfall and sunlight. It is a typical pioneer species on abandoned or cleared ground.

Question 4

What does Merremia umbellata look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a twining vine with heart-shaped leaves and bright yellow, funnel-shaped flowers arranged in clusters (umbels) on long stalks. The flowers are the most recognisable feature. The plant can climb several metres and produces small capsule fruits.

Question 5

Is Merremia umbellata considered an invasive plant?

Accepted Answer

In some parts of the world, particularly Pacific island ecosystems, related Merremia species have been flagged as invasive. In Sri Lanka, M. umbellata tends to colonise disturbed habitats rather than undisturbed forest, so its ecological impact on native flora is generally considered limited.

Question 6
