Kanya and Kanya Porondam

When bride and groom are both born under Kanya (Virgo), the rashi-level porondam and porutham results are the same whichever way you read them. This page explains what the calculator finds for this pairing, and why the two birth stars matter far more than the shared sign.

Which Kanya is meant here, and what does a shared rashi mean?

The rashi used in Sri Lankan marriage matching is the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac, not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes. So Kanya here means the Moon was in Kanya at birth.

When both people share Kanya, the rashi count from bride to groom is 1, meaning the two Moons sit in the same sign. Because the signs are identical, reversing the roles of bride and groom changes nothing at the rashi level: every result below applies equally in both directions. In the calculator, the rashi item (Sinhala rashi, Tamil rasi) is shown as obtained for this pairing.

Are the two rashi lords friendly?

Kanya is ruled by Mercury, so both the bride's and the groom's rashi lord is the same planet. There is no question of friendship or enmity between two different planets here, because only one planet is involved.

The calculator therefore shows the rashi lord item, called rashyadhipathi in Sinhala porondam and rasi adhipathi in Tamil porutham, as obtained. This holds whether the bride or the groom is considered first, since both lords are Mercury.

Together with the rashi item, this gives the pairing a consistent start at the sign level, though it is only part of the wider picture that the birth stars complete.

What about vashya for Kanya with Kanya?

Vashya looks at a traditional sense of mutual attraction or influence between the two signs. Each rashi has a set list of signs considered vashya to it, and the matching is read from that list rather than from whether the signs are alike.

For Kanya paired with Kanya, the calculator shows vashya (Tamil vasya) as not obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems, and in both directions. Sharing a sign does not by itself fulfil this item.

It is worth keeping this in proportion. Vashya is one item among many, and no single item decides a match. Families usually look at how all the items come together, especially those drawn from the birth stars.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Most porondam and porutham items depend on each person's nakshatra (birth star) and its quarter, not on the rashi. Kanya contains nine star-quarters, so two Kanya-born people can form 81 different star-quarter combinations, and the results vary widely across them.

Among those 81 combinations, only about 15% reach 8 or more of the 10 Tamil poruthams, while about 51% give a weak overall Tamil result and about 36% show rajju as not obtained. In the Sinhala system, about 95% pass the porondam assessment when the weekday item is left aside.

This is why entering full birth details in the calculator, and consulting a family astrologer for marriage decisions, gives a far more meaningful answer.
