Question 1

What is Impatiens repens?

Accepted Answer

Impatiens repens is a creeping, yellow-flowered herb belonging to the family Balsaminaceae. It is native primarily to the wet zone of Sri Lanka and is catalogued as part of the island's ayurvedic medicinal plant heritage. The plant spreads along the ground via trailing stems that root at the nodes.

Question 2

Where does Impatiens repens grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is found mainly in Sri Lanka's wet zone — the humid south-western lowlands and lower slopes of the central highlands. It favours shaded, moist environments such as stream banks, forest floors, and mossy rocky surfaces. Undisturbed forest areas like Sinharaja represent prime habitat for this species.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Impatiens repens?

Accepted Answer

Traditional ayurvedic practitioners in Sri Lanka have used preparations from Impatiens repens, particularly for skin-related conditions, in the form of poultices or decoctions. Formal scientific research on the species is limited, so therapeutic claims should be treated cautiously and any use guided by a qualified practitioner.

Question 4

Is Impatiens repens endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is endemic or near-endemic, meaning it occurs naturally in Sri Lanka and possibly in very limited parts of southern India. Its restricted range makes it particularly dependent on the conservation of Sri Lanka's wet-zone forests.

Question 5

Is Impatiens repens the same as a busy Lizzie?

Accepted Answer

They are related — both belong to the genus Impatiens and the family Balsaminaceae — but they are different species. The cultivated busy Lizzie (Impatiens walleriana) is from East Africa and Madagascar. Impatiens repens is a wild, yellow-flowered species native to Sri Lanka.

Question 6

Can I collect Impatiens repens from Sri Lankan forests?

Accepted Answer

Collecting plants from Sri Lanka's protected forests and national parks is prohibited under national law, including the Flora and Fauna Protection Ordinance. Visitors are welcome to observe and photograph the plant in the wild, but removal is not permitted.

Question 7

How does Impatiens repens relate to Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's ayurvedic system draws on thousands of indigenous plant species, and Impatiens repens is among those formally catalogued for their traditional medicinal relevance. It forms one small part of a deeply layered botanical tradition that also includes well-known herbs and complex multi-plant formulations.
