Question 1

What is Hopea modesta used for in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Hopea modesta is catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants, where species in the Hopea genus are associated with resin and bark preparations used in traditional treatments for skin conditions and inflammation. Bioactive compounds found in related dipterocarp species have also attracted interest for antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Specific clinical research on this species remains limited, but its inclusion in the ayurvedic catalogue reflects centuries of empirical use by Sri Lankan traditional healers.

Question 2

Where does Hopea modesta grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Hopea modesta is associated with Sri Lanka's lowland and submontane wet zones, where it grows within closed-canopy tropical forest. It belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae, which forms the emergent canopy layer in rainforests such as Sinharaja in the southwest of the island. The species prefers intact forest rather than secondary growth, making undisturbed forest habitat critical to its presence.

Question 3

Is Hopea modesta endangered or threatened?

Accepted Answer

Many species in the Hopea genus are listed as vulnerable or endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and historical logging pressure. Sri Lanka's wet-zone forests, where dipterocarps like Hopea modesta are found, are among the most fragmented on the island. Conservation efforts through protected areas and botanical garden propagation programmes aim to safeguard remaining populations.

Question 4

What family does Hopea modesta belong to?

Accepted Answer

Hopea modesta belongs to the plant family Dipterocarpaceae, a group of tropical trees found across South and Southeast Asia. The family is known for tall emergent trees that dominate rainforest canopies, as well as for producing commercially valuable timber and resins. Within Sri Lanka, dipterocarps are closely associated with the wet lowland and submontane forest zones.

Question 5

How is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue maintained?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine oversees the regulation, research, and documentation of ayurvedic plant knowledge, including native medicinal trees. The Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens in Kandy maintains living collections of many documented species. University departments and government ayurvedic hospitals also conduct pharmacological research that builds on classical textual traditions.

Question 6

What resin does Hopea modesta produce and what is it used for?

Accepted Answer

Like other Dipterocarpaceae, Hopea and related genera produce dammar resin, which has traditionally been used in topical preparations and as a treatment for skin-related conditions across South and Southeast Asian medicine systems. The resin also has historical uses as a varnish and incense material. Its medicinal applications within Sri Lankan ayurveda are part of a broader tradition of utilising forest-derived resins.

Question 7

Are there other Sri Lankan trees similar to Hopea modesta in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Sri Lanka's ayurvedic catalogue includes numerous native trees with comparable roles. Pongamia pinnata is documented for anti-inflammatory bark and oil preparations, while Acacia chundra is noted for astringent properties used in oral and skin care. Syzygium aromaticum, the clove tree, bridges culinary and therapeutic traditions. These species together reflect the depth and diversity of Sri Lanka's native ethnobotanical heritage.
