Question 1

What is Dipterocarpus glandulosus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Dipterocarpus glandulosus is catalogued among Sri Lanka's officially recognised Ayurvedic medicinal plants. In related Dipterocarpus species, the resin and bark have traditionally been used for skin conditions, rheumatic complaints, and wound healing, though formal clinical evidence is limited. Consulting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner is recommended before any therapeutic use.

Question 2

Where does Dipterocarpus glandulosus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows in the wet and intermediate zone forests of Sri Lanka, primarily in the south-western lowlands and the central hill country where rainfall is high. Protected areas such as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve are among the best remaining habitats for native Dipterocarpus populations.

Question 3

Is Dipterocarpus glandulosus endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Several Dipterocarpus species in Sri Lanka are endemic or near-endemic to the island. D. glandulosus is recorded as a Sri Lankan species within a genus whose main diversity lies in South-East Asia, making Sri Lanka an important westward outpost for the Dipterocarpaceae family.

Question 4

What does the name Dipterocarpus mean?

Accepted Answer

The name derives from the Greek words for 'two-winged fruit,' referring to the enlarged wing-like sepals that surround the seed and aid in wind dispersal. This is the most recognisable botanical feature of the Dipterocarpaceae family.

Question 5

How does Dipterocarpus glandulosus fit into Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalogue of medicinal plants used in the indigenous healing tradition. Dipterocarpus glandulosus is included in this catalogue, acknowledging its historical role in traditional medicine practiced on the island. Its reference code in Lakpura's documentation system is LK94006584.

Question 6

Are dipterocarp forests in Sri Lanka protected?

Accepted Answer

Key dipterocarp forest areas are protected under Sri Lanka's national park and forest reserve system. Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most significant protected area for primary dipterocarp rainforest. Despite legal protections, habitat fragmentation outside reserve boundaries remains a concern.

Question 7

What is gurjun oil and is it related to Dipterocarpus glandulosus?

Accepted Answer

Gurjun oil is an oleo-resin extracted from the trunks of various Dipterocarpus species across South and South-East Asia, historically used in traditional medicine and as a wood preservative. Species within the same genus as D. glandulosus are known sources of this resin, though commercial extraction from Sri Lanka's native populations is not common today.
